Le Morte D'Arthur | Thomas Mallory

A bit of a slog in parts, as there are many side adventures. But the story as a whole is epic and the basis for many modern references and subsequent works. The end is sufficiently epic to make it all worth it. Perhaps the archaic language is the best part!

Great story and VERY different from the movie. Recommended to anyone who likes sci-fi, dinosaurs, or wants to experience the source material for the amazing film.

Excellent fictional story framed as a scholarly work with citations and fake bibliography. A really fun retelling of Beowulf!

A great classic of the Extraordinary Voyages adventure novels. Classic sci-fi from one of the fathers of the genre. If you love geology, geography, paleontology, or just adventurous travel, you will find joy in this book.

A fun heist story. I definitely enjoyed it as a fantastic romp through the archetypal heist adventure.

An excellent return to the main story with fantastic fey intrigue and some reappearances by awesome friends (or foes?). Another awesomely dramatic final confrontation!

I really like this series and most readers will be happy with Ghost Story, I imagine. I personally didn't prefer it though. I did like the premise (no spoilers) but was happy to regain the main plot in the subsequent story.

Perhaps the most dramatic story of the series so far. Cannot emphasize how epic this one is! Lots of vampire intrigue and many other plot elements to keep fans happy.

Very cools story and, again, continuing lots of plot elements. Fey intrigue is, imo, the best part of the series!

Can't say enough good of this series. This story continues to develop plot elements introduced in previous stories. Again, Butcher ends the adventure in a suitably dramatic way!

Among my favorites of the series. Fantastic story with some memorable villains and action scenes. Again, Butcher ties it all up at the end with an exciting and rather whimsical confrontation. Love the tie-ins with real world Chicago.

Excellent story involving supernatural intrigue on the set of an erotic film (so, lots of levity and ridiculousness too)! Resolution is amazing.

A solid story that introduces a new villainous faction. I must admit I am not a fan of this faction on the whole, but the stories are always great and well integrated into the series plot.

This is one of my favorites in the series. I love the fey intrigue and the final scenes are among the most exciting of any fantasy work. The series story continues to build.

Straightforward short story in typical HPL fashion. Worth a read if you're a fan.

A collection of works loosely themed around HPL's “dream cycle.“ Usually more whimsical and less dark than his other works, all tales still contain that typical HPL horror in some degree. Some of the stories are very short, others are novella length. Some are excellent, others mediocre. Overall I enjoyed the collection and would recommend for those who enjoy fantasy as well as horror.

A short and interesting tale narrated from a unique perspective (for HPL). Pretty simple and to the point, but fun nonetheless.

Definitely one to read if interested in HPL's dream cycle. Short and whimsical, with the typical darkness associated with HPL in a much lesser degree.

This tale has some excellent elements, but I think it is weakened by the long, overly-detailed descriptions HPL sometimes includes. Usually these relate to describing alien physiology or strange geometry. I like those elements in general, but not when they detract from the plot and become boring. Speaking of the plot, it was interesting and quite good as a horror read. The ending was the best part descriptively, if unsurprising.

Case of Charles Dexter Ward | Howard Phillips Lovecraft
Pickpick

This is one of HPL's longer works (a short novel). It shares plot elements with other HPL works but is unique enough to not be boring to someone who has read his other material. Though some parts are a little slow, overall the pacing is good and the element of mystery and rising horror is excellent. I was worried about long, tangential excursuses typical in some of his longer tales, but was pleasantly surprised that there weren't any of note.

This was a unique ramble through HPL's dream cycle material. The plot reads like a tabletop fantasy RPG game (which is very fun)! The atmosphere (HPL's greatest skill, IMO) is wonderful. Unlike some of his longer tales, this one does not include an overly detailed excursus on some facet of cosmic geometry or alien physiology. The whimsical (but also dark) nature of the tale reminds me of Alice in Wonderland, but with a focused plot.

The King in Yellow | Robert Chambers

Most people will be introduced to this through Lovecraft. A strange collection of short stories & poems. The first 4 stories are excellent weird tales. The 5th, The Demoiselle d'Ys (my fav), is a supernatural tale of a different kind than the preceding. The rest is a collection of bizarre poems & some short stories mostly about artists & romance with no (or few) elements that link them to the earlier works. Overall worth reading, but a mixed bag.

A great classic of the HPL universe. Classic exploration/mystery horror tale with lots of attention to detail (perhaps TOO much detail). I love geology and paleontology and even I thought there was too much science jargon in the book. The ambiance is great, but a little less evocative than some other HPL works. There are about two chapters that are total info dumps and get tedious, but otherwise a must for classic horror readers.

An excellent and satisfying ending to this trilogy! Solid internal consistency of the plot and world. I had a lot of fun experiencing this adventure of gritty, high fantasy.

There are legitimate concerns about HPL's personal views which are well documented elsewhere. Speaking only for the short story, it was an interested diversion from HPL's typical settings. Ancient Egypt is always fascinating & is fertile ground for the pseudo-history HPL weaves into his tales. The protagonist, Harry Houdini, commissioned HPL to write it. I found the beginning/middle very exciting but was bored with the “horror“ of the ending.

Shunned House | H P Lovecraft

There are legitimate concerns about HPL's personal views which are well documented elsewhere. Speaking only for the short story, it was an excellent and atmospheric creepy tale. Loved the investigation elements as always and the way HPL weaves history into the story to give it a sense of authenticity.

The Unnamable | H.P. Lovecraft
Panpan

There are legitimate concerns about HPL's personal views which are well documented elsewhere. Speaking only for the short story, I did like some of the imagery. But the “plot“ was a bit melodramatic and it is, overall, a (very) short trifle one can skip without missing much.

The Shadow over Innsmouth | H. P. Lovecraft
Pickpick

There are legitimate concerns about HPL's personal views which are well documented elsewhere. Speaking only for the novella, it is among his best stories. The pacing is solid even with some long descriptions of urban navigation. There is an atypically high (for HPL) amount of action too. Usually I have figured out the horrific “reveal“ well before the end, but this tale managed to keep me interested to the last. Typical excellent HPL atmosphere.

The Thing on the Doorstep | Howard Phillips Lovecraft
Pickpick

There are legitimate concerns about HPL's personal views which are well documented elsewhere. Speaking only for the short story, it was a typically good HPL mystery/horror with especially good psychological elements. Not really much of a “reveal“ by the end, as the reader can easily figure out what's going on, but solid nonetheless.

The Haunter of the Dark | H. P. Lovecraft
Mehso-so

There are valid concerns about HPL's personal views, they are well documented. Speaking only of the short story, it is considered among his best horror stories. I found it interesting in the beginning as a mystery, but the horror elements (other than the excellent HPL atmosphere) were less impressive. Pretty short and worth a read as part of the Cthulhu mythos.

The Outsider | H. P. Lovecraft
Mehso-so

There are valid concerns about Lovecraft's personal views. Speaking only of the short story (and it is very short), it's a fairly straightforward horror tale. Literary critics will place it in different genres and point to psychological themes exemplified in the work. All true, but for a casual reader or someone trying to get through HPL as one of the classics of sci-fi/fantasy, it's worth a read for sake of completion.

The Shadow Out of Time | H. P. Lovecraft
Mehso-so

There are valid issues with Lovecraft's personal views which I will not reiterate because they are well documented. This novella is somewhat longer than most of his other works. It has a very interesting premise, but has the major drawback of a slow, dragging, and overly detailed sci-fi element in the middle that seems like it could be about 1/5 the length it is. The beginning and end are mysterious and exciting respectively, and are classic HPL.

The Horror at Red Hook | H. P. Lovecraft
Pickpick

There are valid issues with Lovecraft's personal views which I will not reiterate because they are well documented. Speaking purely about the short story, it is one of HPL's NYC tales. It was a good police investigation-style mystery with the typical supernatural/horror elements.

The Music of Erich Zann | H. P. Lovecraft
Pickpick

There are valid issues with Lovecraft's personal views which I will not reiterate as they are well documented. Speaking purely about the short story, it is a fun (short) tale that i found rather unique. The horror element is less present, but it is typically mysterious and mind-bending. The street that cannot be found - a fun and somewhat benign way to imply deeper, unknowable things.

The Colour Out of Space | H P Lovecraft
Pickpick

There are valid issues with Lovecraft's personal views which I will not reiterate because they are well documented. Speaking only of the short story, it is among the fan favorites for good reason. HPL truly captures the the horror of something completely inhuman and outside of human understanding. A great sci-fi horror that doesn't rely on gimmicky alien “effects“ but tugs at something universally, anciently frightening.

The Call of Cthulhu | H.P. Lovecraft
Pickpick

There are valid issues with Lovecraft's personal views which I will not reiterate because they are well documented. Speaking only of the short story, it is perhaps the most well known of HPL. The story itself has the investigative elements that I think HPL does so well. I thought the last third of the tale was the weakest, and would have preferred more unexplained mystery. Still, absolutely necessary if reading HPL. Cthulhu fhtagn!

Midsummer Night's Dream | William Shakespeare
Pickpick

One of my favorite plays by the Bard. Magical and lighthearted, but with a moral. Perhaps more of a fun one to read, though there are still parts (as in all of Shakespeare's plays) that drag on with seemingly little impact on the larger plot. Contains some of the most recognizable characters of faerie lore now peppered throughout popular culture.

Not light reading. Some of the tales in this work are fun, funny, and even a bit exciting. Some, however, are extremely boring. Of note, The Tale of Melibee is perhaps the most boring thing I have ever read! If one wants to complete this to earn the achievement of reading the classics, good luck! If one would rather read select tales, it would prove more enjoyable.

The Mabinogion | Sioned Davies

This is the source of much of Welsh folklore and mythology. I appreciate that immensely. Some of the tales are excellent and genuinely fun to read. Others are somewhat boring and bogged down by long lists of names and genealogies. This is not uncommon in older works and I try to ignore it stylistically. If one were to pick and choose stories, skipping some, the reading would be more enjoyable.

In the Vault | H.P. Lovecraft
Mehso-so

There are valid issues with Lovecraft's personal views which I will not reiterate because they are well documented. Speaking only of the short story, I found it a straightforward and somewhat predictable tale. It lacked the really great atmosphere of Lovecraft, but is so short that one might as well read it to polish off the HPL corpus. Could be told as a campfire ghost story without any controversy and would likely elicit indifference.

An amazing addition to the Star Wars epic! The thrilling conclusion completes the arc of character developments and reveals the results of Grand Admiral Thrawn's plans. Anyone who loves the classic Star Wars canon (now called “Legends“) will enjoy this series immensely. Thrawn, a fan favorite, is the real selling point. It's great to have all the classic characters in their familiar roles, but Thrawn, as the new antagonist, is masterful.

There are valid issues with Lovecraft's personal views which I will not reiterate because they are well documented. Speaking only of the short story, it is typical of the mystery/horror he does so well. The atmosphere and sense of investigation are excellent. The horror elements are both traditionally overt and subtle, making the story all the creepier. The elements of historicity woven into the tale lend it a sense of verisimilitude.

The Rats in the Walls | H.P. Lovecraft
Pickpick

There are valid issues with Lovecraft's personal views which I will not reiterate - they are well documented. Consider reading the reprint from the 50s. Speaking only of the short story, it is typical of the mystery/horror he does so well. The atmosphere & sense of investigation are excellent. Parts remind me of Poe (an influence for HPL). The horror elements are truly ghastly, which is not something I seek out, but are essential for the genre.
